A non-profit group has rescued the state park that contains world famous Mono Lake and its bizarre tufa outcroppings, California State Parks officials announced Thursday.The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve was officially removed from the list of state parks scheduled for closure next year after the preservation organization known as the Bodie Foundation agreed to collect the fees necessary to keep the lake and surrounding facilities open. California State Parks will continue to manage the reserve. It is the fourth state park, including two in the Bay Area, to be removed from the original list of 70 parks, historic buildings and monuments scheduled for closure by the end of June 2012. (more).
