i think it is where the bay area was mapped from.

Brewer estimated that the view embraced 80,000 square miles, 40,000 "in tolerably plain view – over 300 miles from north to south, and 260 to 280 miles from east to west". The view includes 60% of california, 35 counties and an area equal to the six New England states. Brewer’s party calculated the height of Mt Diablo at 3,876.4’ (actual 3,849’).
