PORTLAND RADS

donal & i lived in the same room. he takes photos.

i visited joe in albany right before he & sara's nyc battle of 2006. we skated a pvc pipe rail on a raining day & watched his part in the new deal video useless wooden toys. if you live in portland you should go see his artwork here. roadie cred here.

tommy is real good at riding bikes & at not posting his picture on the internet. we lived in a 150 year old farm house in downtown santa rosa with my brother and brian. we worked together at two different jobs in two different towns and went vegan together.

HSA MIX TRADE 2008: MARCH

G.DAMN! This 45rpm mix will knock your socks off. it came with original artwork you'll see if you download the mp3's. it also broke senduit's 100mb limit so, fittingly, there's an a side (here): howlin wolf, dakora staton, art blakey, latin express, erwin halletz, grizzly bear song (frisco love song), cosigner, the busy band, robert parker, aretha franklin, lowell fulsom & a b side (here): roberto con los hispanos, rodolfo jordan con los matematicos, sheila, claude francois, love sounds journey, southern allstars, nosotrash, george brassens, barbara lynn, jesse james, sergio mendes, shieky & aviva sing. nathalie made it & thank you nathalie for doing so. i haven't stopped listening since it came in on saturday. also, here's my march bonus mix of super mellow vibes. if you tried the link below & it said expired the same day i posted it, that was because i was real hung over & forgot to choose the 1 week hosting time versus the 1/2 hour. i'm on the straight & narrow though for the rest of this week & the links in this here post should all be working. i promise not to build you up just to break you down in the future. babe, i was drunk. p.s. todays the deadline.

E. 12TH BETWEEN 1ST & A

i have no idea who these guys are above but they are good & the park is by my house. i went to shred yesterday when the rain dried up. i had to hop over the tall spikey fence. when i got to the top, i thought about being impaled and then i biffed scrambling over to the other side and my hands are still numb from slapping the pavement. i am an old man. it was real worth having the place to myself though.

"you don't take it out on anybody when you're tired. i do. why is that?"
i shook my head. "i never noticed," i said. "funny."
"maybe you've got this deep well inside, and you shout into it, "the king's got
donkey's ears!' and then everything's OK."

i thought about that for a while.

THERE IS A DEATH IN THE SMELL OF SPRING

a few weeks back i started the invisible man & today it came to a close with good timing. yesterday, i was able to see jeff wall's show, the photographer that inspired me to read it, & ashley, who showed me the photo, mailed a couple soup recipes i had time to try out.

read the book if you haven't. especially if you live in manhattan. it's real intense. gets you thinking about history, humanity, aspirations & some other stuff. last night, a friend pointed out that the text beginning, "i've recalled it often, here in my hole," on pages 34 & 35, is a metaphor for the entire story. ralph ellison is brilliant.

here's a soup recipe:

1/4 olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
2-3 garlic cloves, chopped up or crushed
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
8 cups veggie stock
2 tblsp tomato paste mixed w/ 1/2 cup h20
2 16oz cans chickpeas
8 cups shredded chard
1 tsp salt

i 1/2'd it to start. 1 - heat oil, add onion for 3 min, then red pepper & garlic for 5 minutes. 2 - add the stock, tomato paste & chickpeas. bring to boil. reduce & simmer for 10 minutes. 3 - add chard for 10 minutes. 4 - remove 2 cups, puree and return to soup.

onto the wind-up bird chronicle by haruki murakami. thanks again sarah. i hear that the translation is missing tons but that it is a great read regardless.
